Our team was tasked with coming up with the Graphical User Interface for Midway Games' alternative football game. Since the game was not tied to the NFL we were asked to create a grittier version of the NFL’s visual language. The concept we came up with was the idea that user was viewing the game through security cameras and deteriorating footage, playing off the opposite of how the NFL portrays itself.
Along with the menu and in-game screens our team created the logos for all the fictional teams in the Blitz League.
Due to the success of the original game a sequel was produced with our team again creating the GUI and team logos. For the sequel we focused on the theme of hard hits and the concussions that resulted from them. As the second title would be released on the next-gen HD consoles, there was more detail to the art with 3D assets being incorporated in the pre-game screens.
Moodboards/ We continued the game’s gritty look and feel, but aimed at more darker themes and visuals. We tried to communicate the game’s story which focused on the player’s decisions off the field and how they impacted his performance and career. Every action had a reaction.
Mockups/ Once the game team had chosen a visual direction, we created both static mockups and animatics of principal screens so as to get sign off from the game designers before spending more time on the remaining screens.
